COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local organizers are hosting holiday events across the Susquehanna Valley this weekend, Dec. 19 to 21 + highlights include a free train display in Elizabethtown on Dec. 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and festive light shows and rides at venues like WellSpan Park and Dutch Wonderland.  WGAL
  • On Dec. 31, Harrisburg hosts a New Year's celebration along 2nd Street with a strawberry drop, fireworks and free street parking after 5 p.m. — Road closures are in effect from Chestnut to Walnut starting at 6 p.m.  WGAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Manufacturers’ Association received a $200K grant from the Department of Labor and Industry Apprenticeship Training Office to expand its apprenticeship programs — the funding will boost advanced manufacturing training in nine Central Pennsylvania counties.  Central Penn Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Marshall Math Science Academy in Harrisburg was locked down on Thursday morning at 8:25 a.m. after an alleged weapon threat on a school bus; an investigation by school officials and police confirmed there was no credible threat and the lockdown ended at 9 a.m.  Local 21 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michael Donar ’25, an Interactive Media major at Harrisburg University, completed a UX internship with the Carlisle Army War College on December 18. He redesigned financial models and built a website for symbol generation in military wargaming.  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Opponents of the $2.3 billion Cuffs Run hydroelectric plant filed their opening brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals to overturn FERC’s November permit; they argue the project could displace homes and harm local farmlands and outdoor recreation in southeastern York County.  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania Treasurer Stacy Garrity said nearly 100,000 residents may soon get a check as part of the Money Match program (which returns unclaimed funds up to $500 automatically), with about $22 million mailed out so far. Residents are urged to cash or deposit their checks promptly.  WGAL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State Health has named Mumtaz Darbar as its new executive vice president and chief transformation officer. She will lead strategic initiatives to unify physician practices and boost operational excellence (a key focus for the health system) as it works to become Pennsylvania's most trusted care provider.  Central Penn Business Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A wall collapse at Broad Street Market has raised questions about the building’s integrity, and project leaders will assess repair options in the coming days—more details will follow.  FOX43
