COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Harrisburg Capital City Region Salvation Army is distributing puffy winter coats to about 5,000 children as part of its 31st Coats for Kids telethon, which runs Monday, Dec. 8 to Friday, Dec. 12. Volunteers sorted thousands of coats for several distribution events at the local facility.  WGAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Zeroday Brewing Company announced that its taproom on 3rd Street will close on Dec. 28 due to rising operational costs and low foot traffic. The company will continue brewing behind Midtown Cinema + keep its other locations serving craft beer.  Central Penn Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will perform at Harrisburg International Airport on May 23 and 24, 2026; tickets with seating options (ranging from general admission to VIP) go on sale starting Jan. 7 at 8 a.m. EST with a 40% early bird discount.  PennLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Dec. 9, the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee voted unanimously to advance a bill making all schools phone-free; the measure now goes to the full Senate and if passed, schools will set policies to ban phone use during the day (with exceptions for special needs).  CBS News Philadelphia
  • Penn State faculty and union allies held a rally inside the Capitol rotunda to announce their vote to form a union with the PSFA, making it one of the largest public sector union campaigns in decades.  FOX43
  • Harrisburg University students hosted Cloudburst—a fighting games tournament at the HU Student Union on Nov. 22 for local players and fellow students. They plan to return early next year to expand the local esports series.  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry today announced nearly $4.2 million in funding for advanced manufacturing training programs in central counties to boost workforce skills — including new robotics technician and apprenticeship courses, officials said.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday reached a $1.55 million settlement with Dollar General after an investigation found registers charged more than shelf prices. The agreement mandates staff training and weekly shelf tag updates in stores (pricing inspections failed over 40% of the time from 2019 to 2023).  FOX43

  • Cumberland Valley swimming teams swept Chambersburg on Tuesday—girls won 134-52 and boys won 100-85 in the Mid-Penn Conference dual meet. The strong performances on both sides marked a standout day in local high school sports.  PennLive
