  • 11-year-old Anderson Yinger delivered (over $1,200) worth of toys to UPMC Children’s in Harrisburg on Monday to bring holiday joy to children in the hospital.  FOX43
  • The Humane Society of Harrisburg is asking for donations of blankets and sheets (basic winter necessities) to help care for animals during winter. The organization hopes the community will provide these items as colder weather arrives soon.  FOX43

  • Amma Johnson’s accessories showroom will reopen downtown at Strawberry Square on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. — it will be inside the Market Street entrance and offer handbags, gifts, and home items. Johnson said she returned after a good experience in the past, and Brad Jones of Harristown Enterprises said her brand inspires local retailers.  Central Penn Business Journal

  • The PA Ballet Academy will perform Nutcracker Sweets at the Pullo Center—its team is finalizing stage details for a festive holiday show.  FOX43

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting Dec. 1, many Pennsylvania utility companies raised electricity rates by more than 10 percent as higher winter supply costs pushed bills up. Some residents in York have already cut back on usage — the PUC advises struggling households to call their utility companies for assistance.  FOX43
  • Some utility companies will raise electric rates by more than 10%—bringing higher bills for PA residents as winter nears. The rate hikes are planned before the season officially starts.  FOX43

  • Harrisburg University announced on December 1 that its new Doctor of Physical Therapy program received accreditation candidacy to expand technology-forward healthcare education and meet growing workforce needs in the area (the hybrid program blends online classes with in-person labs for working professionals).  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today, a winter weather advisory is in effect for the Susquehanna Valley from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. as the first plowable snowfall of the season begins between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., with most areas expected to see 2 to 5 inches while parts of southern Lancaster, York and southeastern Adams counties may receive only a light coating—drivers should prepare for slippery roads and possible delays during the morning commute.  WGAL

  • Harrisburg homeless shelters are preparing for snowy weather by planning to accept extra guests when capacity is surpassed. The shelters, already full, will offer winter jackets and referral services to keep individuals safe on cold nights.  Local 21 News

  • Milton Hershey School will submit its West End Development Plan to the Derry Township Board of Supervisors next month+ the 245-acre project will include new homes, shops and parks along Waltonville and Bullfrog Valley Roads+ officials expect the plan to bring lasting benefit to the area.  Central Penn Business Journal
