BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wawa held a grand opening ceremony for its tenth store on Shikellamy Avenue in Sunbury yesterday and featured a parade, ribbon cutting, charity hoagie building competition, and a $2,500 grant (from its foundation) to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. The company, which opened its first store in the region in 2024, will add up to 40 locations in the next five years.  ABC27
  • Cleveland-Cliffs announced that it will permanently close its Steelton plant on January 13th, 2026 due to weak demand—500 workers are affected and the facility has been idled since summer. An agreement reached on June 27th, 2025 set benefits for the workers and leaves open the possibility for future business on the property.  ABC27
  • Chick-fil-A will open a new restaurant at 2007 Dotson Court in Susquehanna Township (near Interstate 81 and Progress Avenue) on Oct. 23 at 6:30 a.m. with local owner Lauren Tindell; guests in cow-themed outfits (like cow suits) on opening day can get a free entree or kids meal, and the restaurant will serve dine-in, drive-thru, carry-out, third-party delivery and mobile orders Monday through Saturday from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.  WGAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State Game Lands 211 in Dauphin County has grown by 509 acres from a donation by The Nature Conservancy—this extra land connects once isolated space to the larger game lands and will help protect the habitat for hawks and birds.  ABC27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Dauphin County will face a detour on northbound Interstate-283 as a maintenance crew repairs the bridge connecting to northbound Interstate-83 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25 and Sunday, Oct. 26 + officials say the work will depend on weather conditions + drivers should check 511PA for live updates.  PennLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State Health announced that Dr. Robert Harbaugh will step down as chief medical officer on Nov. 1st—Dr. Umar Farooq has been appointed interim chief medical officer at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Dr. Harbaugh will continue as a University Distinguished Professor.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Aging care providers in Pennsylvania face a severe staff shortage with over 2,600 open CNA and LPN positions as the need grows with an increasing older population—LeadingAge PA launched a Career Center and urged lawmakers to pass Senate Bills 114, 115 and 116 to boost training and recruitment.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Pennsylvania residents who buy insurance on the marketplace have begun receiving letters warning that premiums will jump by an average of 102% as Congress did not renew the tax credits that kept rates lower—families like the Tilleys are now worried about affording necessary care. The Insurance Department said these steep increases are coming in open enrollment, leaving many at risk of losing coverage.  PennLive

  • Coach Percy Maple of the Seven Sorrows Eagles in Middletown was suspended for the season after he reported racist taunts and clashed with referees — 220 youth players on the program are now affected. The Capital Football Association upheld the decision after an emergency review — the team must now follow a corrective action plan.  PennLive
