Good morning, Harrisburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 16th of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lower Paxton township officials did not vote on keeping the July Fourth fireworks show as safety concerns were raised after past events led to arrests and fights. The decision is now delayed until mid-November when the board will review a survey of 455 voters—244 of whom wanted to cancel the show—and consider changes such as removing the food trucks.  Local 21 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Next Shot Golf at 5218 Simpson Ferry Road in Mechanicsburg has expanded to 5,200 square feet and added a putting green plus a fifth simulator for lessons—the business will hold a grand opening celebration from Oct. 17-19 featuring a noon ribbon-cutting, free food, and discounts on clubs.  PennLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of Aging is not telling how many older adults are in danger because county checks are not done right—experts say missing numbers hide big problems. • After Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on Oct. 14, PennCyber warned schools, businesses and residents that devices running the outdated system are at risk from cyberattacks. The advisory urged users to upgrade to Windows 11, replace old devices, enroll in the Extended Security Update program + isolate legacy systems to protect sensitive information.  FOX43
  • Pennsylvania schools and nonprofits have not received funds for four months because of a budget deadlock, and even though the state earned $40 million from frozen cash, it will not give interest to help them. Lawmakers have yet to agree on a new budget—forcing many groups to borrow money or cut expenses to meet essential costs.  PennLive
  • Senator John Kane introduced a bill called the Compassionate Access to Medical Cannabis Act — also known as Ryan’s Law — that would allow terminal patients to use prescribed cannabis while receiving hospital care. Some hospitals already permit its use, and supporters say the bill — if passed — will create consistent rules even though some lawmakers remain concerned about lingering stigma.  FOX43

HEALTH NEWS

  • UPMC Hillman Cancer Center expanded its advanced cancer care by introducing Surface Guided Radiation Therapy, BiTE immunotherapy, and advanced internal radiation for gynecological cancers to improve treatment precision and safety in Central Pennsylvania. The new services now let patients receive complex care close to home — avoiding travel to Pittsburgh for procedures.  Central Penn Business Journal
