ECONOMY NEWS

  • In Pennsylvania, 11,692 new unemployment claims were filed during the week of July 5, 417 fewer than the previous week (national claims fell by 5,000 to 227,000) while the PA Department of Labor reported a steady 3.9% unemployment rate in May.  ABC27

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania’s 911 system is facing intermittent failures and authorities advise residents to use their county non-emergency numbers if help is needed (officials are working to resolve the issue).  FOX43
  • The U.S. Department of Justice asked Pennsylvania for details on how it handles voter registration and voter rolls under HAVA, and the state must reply within 30 days as part of a nationwide review of election-law compliance + Pennsylvania officials plan to respond while similar inquiries have been sent to Arizona, Colorado, and Wisconsin.  ABC27
  • The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency restored 911 services across the state after working late into the night with county offices and tech experts—an investigation will continue while officials ask people not to call for testing purposes.  WGAL
  • 911 services in Pennsylvania were disrupted Friday afternoon and restored by midnight after the problem was traced to the state’s connection vendor — the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency said it will continue investigating the outage.  PennLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • On July 11, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association reported high E.coli levels at 21 water sites in three counties and urged residents to avoid contact with the water. The nonprofit tests the watershed weekly—bacteria levels can rise after storms and make swimmers sick.  ABC27
