COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two years ago, an electrical fire on July 10, 2023, largely destroyed the historic Broad Street Market building, leaving its vendors displaced while some walls remained standing. City officials approved restoration plans in September 2024 and construction will begin in October 2025, lasting until April 2027 with vendors scheduled to move back by May 31, 2027.  Local 21 News

CRIME NEWS

  • John Esh, 31, intentionally caused an explosion at his mobile home in Lykens Township on Monday by disconnecting a propane line, and police said the blast led to total destruction and his arrest on charges of arson, causing a catastrophe, reckless burning, and criminal mischief.  WGAL
  • Bryan Chapman, a former West Shore Home executive fired in August 2023, was indicted on extortion charges after he demanded over $100,000 in severance by threatening to reveal trade secrets, and federal prosecutors are pursuing the case+ he faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.  FOX43

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Lower Paxton Township Veolia Water customers say discolored water has left rust-like stains on clothing and forced many to spend extra time and money on laundromats—customers report that the company advises flushing cold water taps for 10–15 minutes and calling customer service if the issue persists. Frustration remains high as the problem has lasted for weeks.  Local 21 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Longtime Dauphin County judge Michael J. Smith died on July 4 from atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease while riding his bike, and a viewing will be held today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Matinchek Funeral Home in Middletown. A tribute will follow at 11 a.m. on July 12 at The Forum Auditorium on Walnut St.—Smith served nearly 50 years in public service.  PennLive
