COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Highspire Borough council proposed an ordinance to ban ball-playing and outdoor games on public streets and sidewalks due to safety concerns—residents argued it would force kids indoors, so the council tabled the proposal for further review.  Local 21 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • York-based Wolfgang Confectioners acquired Warrell Corporation in Cumberland County to boost its candy co-manufacturing, packaging and innovation capabilities. The acquisition added 230,000 sq. ft. to its 150,000 sq. ft. facility and supports plans for growth + workforce expansion.  Central Penn Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • During the four-day Independence Day travel period from July 3 to 6, state troopers investigated 803 vehicle crashes that killed 12 people and led to 458 DUI arrests—troopers also issued 5,790 speeding citations along with other traffic tickets, according to data released this week.  FOX43
  • Steelton Mayor Ciera Dent issued an emergency proclamation closing the Soul Lounge hookah bar after a police officer shot Kenneth Lamar Cox around 4 a.m. Sunday near Pine Street and River Alley when Cox fired at a bystander—Cox was charged with aggravated assault and other counts while a man with a gunshot wound to the foot was treated and investigators reviewed the officer’s actions.  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Shapiro signed House Bill 1431 on July 9, which repeals Pennsylvania's Sunday hunting ban and will take effect in 60 days before deer season begins. Local hunters and farmers now back the change after new trespassing laws were added to help reduce crop damage.  FOX43
  • A bill headed to the state Senate will simplify canceling subscriptions by requiring companies to offer online cancellation and clear terms for automatic renewals. Rep. Joe Ciresi said the proposal will help consumers cancel unwanted subscriptions without lengthy calls or in-person visits.  WGAL
