Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 5th of June.
Good morning, Harrisburg.
🏘️ Community
Hundreds of riders and advocates gathered at the State Capitol building yesterday morning to call for more funding and better accessibility for public transportation—speakers including State Rep. Aerion Abney warned that without more support, daily transit services may face major impacts, and one blind rider from southern York said accessible share ride transit connects him to his favorite local spots. The group stressed the urgent need to expand routes and services to help riders maintain their daily routines.
🚨 Crime
State police charged 24-year-old Quentin Parthemore—accused of ignoring road closures on the 3000 block of Peter’s Mountain Road on April 25 and striking a construction foreman with his Tesla, which caused the worker to slide off the hood—with aggravated assault and eight counts of recklessly endangering another person.
🎓 Education
Today, a report by a coalition led by Teach Plus shows that teacher shortages in Dauphin, Cumberland, Perry and Lebanon counties are extremely severe, with Dauphin needing 502 teachers + only 59 new teaching certificates issued last year.
The report urges the legislature to fund student-teacher stipends and improve programs to rebuild the teacher pipeline.
🏛️ Government
An investigation by Humane World for Animals found hundreds of ivory products in stores and online across 27 counties, and a press conference at the Capitol yesterday introduced House Bill 994—this bill will ban the sale and purchase of endangered animal parts and set fines from $5,000 to $20,000 based on product cost.
🏥 Health
Officials from Pennie & the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services met Tuesday to discuss how a House-passed budget bill could soon make affordable health coverage much more expensive for nearly 500,000 Pennsylvanians, including small business owners, farmers and early retirees. They warned that the cuts will force rural hospitals to shift care costs to insured patients, which could raise premiums for three million Medicaid recipients in our state.
