COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rep. Nate Davidson secured a $25,000 grant to restore the Peffer Street Pollinator Garden, which was wrecked by a construction vehicle on December 20. The garden will be rebuilt with new protective fencing and upgrades under the City Beautiful H2O Program—work is set to begin soon.  PennLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Cody Balmer, accused of trying to burn down Gov. Shapiro’s official residence, is seeking to delay his next court hearing because he is receiving mental health treatment—he faces charges including attempted homicide and arson that caused millions in damages.  WITF

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Steelton—Highspire School District unveiled a rendering of a new stadium revitalization project on Thursday, outlining a three-phase plan that will upgrade sports and educational facilities for student athletes and community members. Former NFL wide receiver David Sullivan, a 1968 graduate, donated $500K to support the project and bring his business expertise to his hometown.  Local 21 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state audit found that volunteer fire departments in York and Dauphin counties misused taxpayer dollars by spending on non-eligible items such as a bounce house + incurring unpaid parking tickets during the 2022 to 2023 term. Most issues arose from bookkeeping mistakes, and departments must repay the improper funds + fix errors to avoid future funding cuts.  FOX43
  • Gov. Shapiro urged lawmakers to pass the Health System Protection Act to stop private equity from harming Pennsylvania hospitals by banning sale-leaseback deals and giving the Attorney General power to block risky acquisitions — lawmakers will vote on the bill in early June to protect patients, workers, and community care. This measure aims to prevent future hospital closures like the one at Crozer.  Central Penn Business Journal

  • After defeating RIT 12-10, the Dickinson College men’s lacrosse team booked its ticket to the Division III national title game in Massachusetts this weekend — marking the first time in program history that the team reached the national final.  FOX43
