COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ South Mountain Golf Course reopened after the Shapiro Administration saved it from being turned into a Michaux State Forest visitor center late last year. Local golfers now enjoy the restored course. FOX43
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Messiah University hosted the Unified 5K and AdaptXpo on Sunday, allowing participants to run, walk + roll side-by-side in an accessible race that celebrated its expansion of adaptive fitness and inclusion initiatives. FOX43
- ➤ Steelton-Highspire School District broke ground on a stadium project in Cottage Hill Saturday and began an eight-week demolition before rebuilding a safe football field with a track and community center for career training and more; a $500K donation from alumnus David Sullivan funds the project, set to finish next spring. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection approved redesignation of more than 530 miles of waterways as High Quality Waters on May 8 — covering 98 streams across 34 counties that support wild trout fisheries, clean drinking water, and outdoor recreation. Future permits for development affecting these waterways will undergo stricter review. PennLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ PennDOT begins shoulder closure repairs on I-83 southbound on the John Harris Memorial Bridge (Susquehanna River) today between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., while three travel lanes and on/off ramps remain open for traffic. ABC27
- ➤ PennDOT will inspect a bridge on I-81 over Conodoguinet Creek today with lane and shoulder restrictions in Silver Spring Township, and work will continue Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Drivers should follow posted signs (inspectors will use a crane from the roadway). ABC27
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Hot temperatures are expected Monday and Tuesday and the American Red Cross (especially concerned about older adults, babies, pregnant women, athletes, and people with disabilities) advises residents to stay hydrated, choose healthy snacks, wear light clothing, and take cool showers to prevent heat-related illnesses. - ➤ Straus Family Creamery recalled organic ice cream flavors on Thursday because products may contain a metal object (retailers in Pennsylvania and other states are removing the affected items). Customers can fill out the online replacement voucher form. ABC27
