COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers are restoring the historic Lincoln Cemetery in Harrisburg by unearthing headstones and preserving African American history this weekend. Saving Our Ancestors Legacy & local historians received a community initiative award for their work honoring over 10,000 burials.  FOX43
  • Harrisburg City Council is hosting Hot Spot Saturdays Community Cleanups starting today at Allison Hill from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers receive gloves, bags, and pickers to clear illegal dumping while events in South Allison Hill, Shipoke, Midtown, and Uptown are scheduled through Sept. 19.  PennLive
  • The 54th annual Greek Fest at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Camp Hill is running today from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. and will continue Sunday until 3 p.m., drawing families with Greek cuisine, dancing and tradition (55,000 pieces of pastry expected to sell out).  WGAL

  • A longtime diner forced to relocate due to the I-83 Capital Beltway project has reopened as Silver Side Cafe & Creamery at 25 Waterford Drive in Mechanicsburg. The new spot offers coffee, ice cream, and light fare while creating about 15 local job openings.  ABC27

CULTURE NEWS

  • Artsfest will take place on Memorial Day weekend from May 23 to May 25 along the riverfront and N. Front Street—featuring over 170 juried artists, live music, mural painting, kids activities and food trucks—to offer Harrisburg residents a day of art and flavor.  TheBurg
  • The Pride of the Susquehanna riverboat will return for the 2026 season under the Harrisburg Area Riverboat Society after a two-year break, with the first cruise starting at 6 p.m. May 22 featuring live entertainment and Memorial Day cruises on May 25 for veterans and military at no cost.  FOX43
  • Harrisburg’s 58th annual Artsfest returns Memorial Day weekend at Riverfront Park on May 23-25—offering over 170 artists, live music, food trucks and family activities. The outdoor event runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 23-24 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 25.  PennLive

  • AAA reported that gas prices remain above $4 a gallon despite a small drop, with the Harrisburg area averaging $4.50 on Friday; Memorial Day travel may push prices higher as global oil costs stay elevated.  PennLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Penn State Health and Four Diamonds honored 16 high school graduates who battled pediatric cancer while finishing school. The ceremony recognized 18-year-old Jaden Banks from York Academy Regional Charter School, who earned scholarships to study music therapy.  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Shapiro signed a bill extending Pennsylvania’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program deadline to Dec. 31, 2026, giving more time for eligible residents (seniors, widows, widowers, and those with disabilities) to apply for up to $1,000 in rebates with distributions starting July 1.  PennLive

  • Tri-County Housing will join local government leaders Monday at 11 a.m. on the 2100 block of N. Fourth Street to unveil five affordable townhomes for eligible low-to moderate-income buyers; the project is backed by federal funds and First Commonwealth Bank support amid a severe housing shortage.  Central Penn Business Journal
