EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Harrisburg University holds its Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. at The Forum Auditorium. The event celebrates 1,306 graduates (118 undergraduates) who are preparing for careers in many fields.  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dauphin County received an F on its annual State of the Air report, putting over 100,000 residents at risk from ozone and particle pollution. Health experts say local sources and emissions from regional coal and gas plants have led to persistent challenges.  Local 21 News
  • A new report from PennEnvironment shows Pennsylvania ranked 47th in renewable energy growth, noting a rise in renewable output by 81% (national average nearly 200%) and an increase in the state's renewable share from 3% to 5%; lawmakers met in Harrisburg Wednesday to debate energy policy amid rising prices.  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Harrisburg council unanimously approved funding for rebuilding the Broad Street Market — destroyed by fire three years ago — and the project now needs an extra $2.3 million for a wall collapse and other change orders.  Local 21 News
  • Gov. Shapiro signed a new Pennsylvania law that requires AEDs at every PIAA athletic event and practice and mandates schools to develop emergency plans, with devices to be installed by May 2029 (named for 15-year-old Greg Moyer) to protect student athletes.  PennLive
  • County hazardous materials teams (Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, and York) will conduct a large-scale hazmat training exercise today near Hersheypark at Hershey Entertainment and Resorts to strengthen regional emergency response, with a notable presence of emergency vehicles during evening hours.  ABC27
  • Carlito Koser, 18, saved five people and two dogs during a home fire on March 3 (he did not attend the ceremony) and was honored along with six other heroes at the Dauphin County District Attorney’s Awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 13 at the county courthouse in Harrisburg.  PennLive
  • The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission released its final tariff framework for large load energy customers yesterday to guide utility companies in managing high-demand users. The framework requires customers over 50 MW (or 100 MW in aggregate) to cover infrastructure costs and protect existing ratepayers.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Senator McCormick and Representative Bresnahan urged FEMA to release over $600 million in pandemic aid to Pennsylvania hospitals to help cover COVID-19 costs; nearly $200 million went to Geisinger, $7.8 million to Pocono Medical Center, and over $2 million to Northeastern Pennsylvania Health Corporation.  Local 21 News
