  • Sycamore Homes, an affordable apartment complex at 1400 Sycamore St., opened on April 28 at 11 a.m. and offers 23 studio units with 500 square feet each and amenities like in-unit washer and dryer, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and a community room—applications are open to residents earning no more than 50% of the median area income.  PennLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Hunter Douglass Shaheen, a 21-year-old Northumberland County man who shot a state trooper during a foot pursuit two years ago, pleaded guilty in Sunbury on Monday, April 28 and was sentenced to 17 to 34 years in state prison — resolving charges in two criminal cases including aggravated assault and unlicensed firearm possession.  PennLive
  • A 911 dispatcher did not properly escalate a call from Cody Balmer after he allegedly firebombed the governor’s residence on April 13—county officials said the error is under internal review—though no further harm was reported.  Local 21 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Firefighters are battling wildfires in Michaux State Forest that have burned over 2,700 acres; the Thompson Hollow Fire in Southampton Township has burned 2,248 acres and is 42% contained while the Hammonds Rocks Fire near Ridge and Cold Springs roads has burned 497 acres and is 92% contained. More than 170 firefighters are working under challenging winds and dry conditions with broken equipment, and no injuries or building damage have been reported—evacuees have been cleared to return home while several roads remain closed.  WGAL

  • Pennsylvania voters will have the option to vote by mail in the May 20 primary elections and must request ballots by 5 p.m. on May 13; the updated guide explains how to fill, sign, and return ballots by 8 p.m. on election day & aims to ensure every vote counts.  Spotlight PA
