CULTURE NEWS

  • The Salvation Army held its Celebration of Harrisburg to mark 140 years of service to local families (highlighting resiliency and ongoing support) as the nonprofit continues offering volunteer and donation opportunities.  Local 21 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Education leaders, lawmakers, and students gather today at the state Capitol rotunda as part of Educator Workforce and Diversity Advocacy Day to urge lawmakers to fully fund the student teacher stipend program and hire more diverse educators (to help remedy a growing teacher shortage).  WGAL
  • HACC announced it will end nearly all varsity sports next fall due to a $5 million deficit — keeping only the esports program that now serves 62 of 130 student-athletes. The college will expand club sports and wellness programs to offer more accessible athletic options.  Local 21 News
  • Hershey High School was evacuated early Thursday after staff detected a mysterious odor inside the building (no injuries were reported) and officials are investigating the source.  Local 21 News
  • Harrisburg University named Christopher Reber, a York native with over 40 years in higher education, as its new president; he will start in June 2026, replacing interim president David Schankweiler who led the school since November 2024.  TheBurg

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Harrisburg may face lane restrictions on I-81 Northbound at the George N. Wade Bridge starting Sunday, Apr. 26 as PennDOT begins a two-week deck patching operation (weather permitting), with work scheduled from Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. during Apr. 26 to Apr. 30 and May 3 to May 7.  ABC27

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Earth Day Wednesday, the American Lung Association released its State of the Air report showing the Harrisburg-York-Lebanon metro area failed ozone and particle pollution tests based on data (2022-2024) and posed risks for children and vulnerable groups.
