COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Allison Hill is now a Blueprint Community as local leaders begin revitalizing the area with affordable housing, business support and resources. Plans include constructing a new facility with nine housing units and three commercial spaces at 13th and Market Streets + unveiling a mural in July.  Local 21 News
  • Ice crews built an ice slide along Second Street Friday and set up 60 sculptures ahead of today's Ice and Fire Festival, which runs from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Organizers expect the milder weather to draw more visitors.  FOX43
  • Margaret E. Moul Home in York County is asking community members for help raising $80,000 to replace essential mobility equipment; the nonprofit will use funds to buy two new customized slings per resident (82 total) to keep them safe and active.  FOX43
  • Strong Towns Harrisburg (promoting smart planning) will host a local Q&A on Wednesday, March 11 at 7 p.m. at Pursuit Coworking where moderator Grant Elledge will lead a discussion with Dauphin County Commission Chairman Justin Douglas to empower residents.  TheBurg
  • A popular courtyard at Broad Street Market will close Tuesday as workers begin utility upgrades for the Brick Building reconstruction (a multimillion dollar project) and it will remain closed through summer. Vendors say that the Stone Building and temporary tent will stay open.  WGAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The historic Hershey Theatre reopened on March 5 after 13 months of renovations that preserved its charm and added nearly 2,000 seats, updated lighting, new heating and electrical systems, and a loading dock (key for production teams), and more than 35 shows are scheduled for this year.  Local 21 News

  • Subhan Khalid ’25, a PhD candidate in Data Science at Harrisburg University, has advanced Bayesian methods in healthcare analytics and presented his work at the BayesiaLab Conference last year; he will present two research papers at the ISPOR conference in Philadelphia from May 17–20.  Harrisburg University of Science and Technology

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Investigators and cleanup crews collected water samples and inspected stormwater controls at J&K Salvage Thursday (in York County) to support ongoing litigation that alleges the business dumped contaminated runoff and that a recent fire caused oil to seep into local waterways.  Local 21 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PennDOT officials warn drivers to watch for potholes this spring as freeze-thaw cycles create dangerous road hazards. Crews fill potholes temporarily with cold mix on state roads while residents can report issues to PennDOT.  FOX43

HEALTH NEWS

  • During a February inspection, Layla Mini Market in Harrisburg recorded more than a dozen health violations including unclean food surfaces and trapped pests (the market has 24 hours to address the issues). The Department of Agriculture noted the inspection is a snapshot of that day’s conditions.  WGAL
