COMMUNITY NEWS

  • LHM Social Services Foundation opened a 42,000 sqft transitional housing facility for its Horizons program to provide housing, meals, and case management to unhoused individuals and families. The facility at 3251 Butler Ave (Susquehanna Township) features 58 furnished units to support long-term stability.  TheBurg
  • Downtown Harrisburg is set for early revitalization as local leaders and businesses launch projects to boost foot traffic and renew public spaces. Coordinated efforts include new events and improved streets (state backed) and community engagement that start showing results now.  TheBurg
  • Pennsylvania’s largest indoor RV show is running today through Sunday, Mar. 1 at the Farm Show Complex & Expo Center, featuring over 800 RVs and the latest technology at discounted prices (tickets available in person and online).  FOX43

CULTURE NEWS

  • Drumming community members established the Downbeat Foundation to honor late drummer Ben Smith by offering free drum lessons and instruments to children in Harrisburg. Its May Jam fundraiser will take place on May 16 at Royal Winery (a nod to Ben’s legacy) and aims to raise $100,000 to expand music access.  TheBurg
  • Whitaker Center opened its new live animal exhibit, Survival of the Slowest: Counterintuitive Adaptations, today; the show features 19 habitats with sloths, green iguanas and chameleons — live educator-led sessions explain how slow-moving animals survive.  TheBurg
  • Art Association of Harrisburg celebrates its 100th year with centennial exhibits including Women of the Permanent Collection running through Nov. 27 and a Centennial Gala on April 26, while offering ongoing art classes and community events at 21 N. Front St.  TheBurg

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caleb Houston ’27 (an advanced manufacturing and robotics student) was inspired by mentor Dr. Charles Shearrow and designed an emergency stop bump guard at the STORMWERX Research Center in Enola.   • Whitaker Center in downtown Harrisburg is hosting Scout Sundays for Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, featuring hands-on STEM workshops from October through May. Participants can earn badges in robotics, coding & engineering and may attend individually or as a troop with discounted admission.  TheBurg
  • Harrisburg High revived its theater program and will perform Once on This Island on March 27, 28, and 29 at the John Harris campus at 2451 Market St. under director Jacob Trimble-Waddell (who seeks to build skills and foster a welcoming space for students).  TheBurg
