Good morning, Harrisburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 27th of January.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During Monday's winter storm, first responders from Citizens Fire Company No. 1 delivered a baby in a tractor-trailer while Cumberland Goodwill EMS provided neonatal resuscitation and a South Middletown Township plow operator escorted the family to a nearby hospital.  Local 21 News
  • Impact Ministries in Harrisburg said its bank account was hacked on Monday, leaving it with fewer resources to serve hot meals for the homeless, and it is asking for donations while the bank works to recover stolen funds (the setback also delays plans for a new Community Resource Center).  Local 21 News
  • Marysville-Rye Library will stop processing passport applications on Feb. 11 after receiving a deactivation letter from the U.S. Department of State — leaving the county courthouse as the only service venue; pre-scheduled appointments will still be honored.  FOX43

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Data from 2025 shows Pennsylvania led the nation in residential fire deaths with 153 civilian casualties; so far this year, two deadly fires have occurred in central PA — prompting officials to urge residents to maintain working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers.  Local 21 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Pretzel Company, a local bakery turned business, was confirmed on Oprah’s Favorite Things list last October — it completed a November 15 launch and now plans to offer new chocolate and pepperoni stuffed pretzels from its Emigsville warehouse.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Talking Breads has added more space using a CAEDC grant to meet growing demand for its breads and sandwiches, now offering an indoor seating area for 25 guests and extra production space. CULTURE NEWS

  • York County’s GRAMMY-winning band Halestorm will kick off the 2026 Summer Concert Series on Saturday, May 16 at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Racecourse (tickets go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. on Ticketmaster).  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Jan. 25, PennDOT lifted road and speed restrictions in its District 8 area covering Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. HEALTH NEWS

  • Sadler Health Center named Lakshmi Polavarapu, MD as its interim chief medical officer yesterday in Mechanicsburg. With a decade of service and leadership of the opioid program at its West Shore center (serving nearly 14,000 patients), she replaces Katrina Thoma as part of a planned succession.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Pa. led the nation in fire deaths last year with 152 fatalities, experts say poor smoke alarm upkeep and unsafe use of extension cords played a role. Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline urges residents today to test alarms and close bedroom doors while sleeping to slow the spread of fire.  PennLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Commercial real estate vacancy increased in 2025 along the I-78/I-81 corridor, but leasing gains in the final quarter and a growing construction pipeline boost confidence for 2026.
