Good morning, Harrisburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 26th of January.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Sunday, Jan. 25, heavy snowfall collapsed multiple tents at the Amiracle Community for the homeless; the nonprofit covered them with tarps + warming blankets and advised residents to use emergency shelters, noting the lot operating since summer had faced wind damage in November.  Local 21 News
  • On Saturday, Jan. 24, Wrightsville fire crews rescued an injured domestic duck trapped in ice at the 700 block of Cool Creek Road (Lower Windsor Township) ahead of the weekend winter storm. The duck was taken to a rehabilitation center (via the Pennsylvania Game Commission) for treatment.  Local 21 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A powerful winter storm is blanketing south-central Pennsylvania today with heavy snow and sleet; the warning lasts until 1 p.m. with gusts up to 40 mph and dangerous road conditions that require extra care.  WGAL
  • The National Weather Service issued a cold weather advisory for south-central counties starting at 7 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Tuesday, warning that wind chills could drop to (15 below zero) and create hazardous road conditions. Residents are urged to bundle up and drive safely.  WGAL
  • A major winter storm brought up to 2 inches of snow per hour across south-central Pennsylvania until early Monday, leaving about 12 inches of accumulation in many areas + the National Weather Service warning remains in effect until 1 p.m. today as northwest winds may cause travel delays.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents can follow over 2,000 PennDOT snowplows on the 511PA website as they work on local roads during the winter storm; the system uses Automated Vehicle Location (AVL) technology to show each truck's position and salt use in real time.  FOX43
  • PennDOT lowered speed limits on highways across Central PA yesterday because heavy snowfall made driving conditions hazardous. Speed was set at 45 mph on routes such as I-78, I-81 (from the Maryland state line to the Schuylkill County line), I-283 and I-83.  Local 21 News
