COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Harrisburg drumming circle gathered on Dec. 27 along the river for their end-of-year meetup, as participants noted that the rhythmic beats brought healing energy.  FOX43
  • On Thursday, Jan. 1, dozens plunged into the icy Susquehanna River on City Island to benefit the Harrisburg Humane Society. The event raised over $43,000 toward a $60,000 goal as snow squalls and 20-degree temperatures (wind chills in the teens) set a brisk scene.  WGAL
  • Robert Fulton Fire Company celebrated New Year’s Day with pork and sauerkraut meals offered for both sit-down and drive-thru service; by 3:30 p.m., nearly 1,000 meals were sold and mashed potatoes and gravy ran out (a nod to good luck for the new year).  WGAL
  • For nearly 30 years, residents have plunged into the icy Susquehanna River to support the Humane Society, with over 200 participants this year working toward a $60,000 goal while puppies are available for adoption.  Local 21 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Jan. 1, a driver crashed through two signs at Linglestown Square Roundabout in Dauphin County — leaving part of a car behind as PennDOT said additional signage will be installed soon.  Local 21 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Jan. 1, a snow squall passed over the Susquehanna Valley and the National Weather Service recorded 0.5 inches in Harrisburg, Cashtown, and Ephrata—lower amounts were measured in places like Carlisle and Hershey.  WGAL
  • In 2025, the Susquehanna Valley experienced record cold at Harrisburg International Airport in January, a dry spell that stressed farmers and contributed to wildfires, record rain in May that led to flash floods and water rescues in June and July, and strong winds on Dec. 19 that caused power outages.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting this weekend, the Pennsylvania Turnpike will increase tolls by 4% (the lowest hike since 2014) with passenger vehicles paying an extra eight cents for E-ZPass and 16 cents for Toll By Plate, while class-five tractor-trailer drivers will see increases of 96 cents to nearly two dollars.  WGAL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials urge children and older adults to get a flu shot after nearly 20,000 hospitalizations were recorded mid-December. They say even if the vaccine is not perfectly matched to current strains, it remains the best protection against severe illness.  FOX43
