EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Students and staff at Elizabethtown College created a documentary film called The Prospect for Freedom that explores William Miller Barbour’s role in early civil rights work, and the college will screen the film free for the public tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Midtown Cinema in Harrisburg and on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. at Zoetropolis Cinema in Lancaster—filmmakers will answer audience questions. - ➤ The northern lights lit up the sky over Harrisburg two nights in a row as bright colors danced above the Susquehanna Valley. Many local viewers shared photos of the vivid display caused by a strong geomagnetic storm. WGAL
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Harrisburg firefighters got a $7 million payment from the signed state budget to fix firehouse buildings, buy new vehicles and offer better pay. Gov. Shapiro said the boost was important after an arson attack—firefighters helped his family when they needed them most while Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the funds will update worn facilities. WGAL
- ➤ PPL said it is not to blame for the recent Harrisburg streetlight outage because their ongoing work downtown is unrelated to the problem, while city officials said they are working with PPL to fix the dim lights. - ➤ Yesterday, the right lane and shoulder on southbound I-83 over the John Harris Memorial Bridge were closed for emergency steel repairs—officials said dissolved deterioration required immediate action to secure the bridge. The closure from the Second Street on-ramp to the off-ramp to Lemoyne is expected to last several weeks while both ramps remain open. PennLive

- ➤ Central Pennsylvania hospitals earned top marks for patient safety in Leapfrog’s latest report — WellSpan’s Ephrata, Good Samaritan, Waynesboro, and York hospitals received A ratings this fall while Penn State Health centers in Hampden, Lancaster, and Hershey also earned high grades. - ➤ Sen. John Fetterman fell near his home yesterday and was taken to a hospital after a ventricular fibrillation flare-up made him light-headed and gave him a minor facial injury. He is under observation in Pittsburgh—doctors are adjusting his medications to help him recover. CBS News Philadelphia
