COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Midwest Food Bank in Dauphin County has been working to meet rising hunger demands as food costs push people to cut back on meals; it now serves over 230 agencies and is facing a shortage of healthy food during the colder months. Executive director Sarah Brennan said cash donations help pay for food and transport costs — volunteer time is also needed.  WGAL
  • Strong winds damaged eight tents on Wednesday night at the homeless site at 1125 South 9th St.—a project of Amiracle4Sure—and the nonprofit said it will replace them with community help before winter.  Local 21 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tribal leaders have reclaimed 17 Native American student remains from the Carlisle Indian Industrial School cemetery—16 reburied by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes and one returned to the Seminole Nation. Efforts to identify and return additional remains from unmarked graves continue as tribes work to address a legacy where over 7,800 Native students were forcibly removed.  PennLive
  • Legendary rock band Journey will begin their farewell Final Frontier Tour on Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the GIANT Center in Hershey—tickets start selling on Nov. 14 at 10 a.m.  WGAL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor—data shows that warehouse stores, schools and health care facilities rank among Cumberland County’s top 25 industries by employment. Warehouse stores, including a Costco in Silver Spring Township that opened last week, highlight one of the leading sectors driving local job growth.  PennLive
  • Lt. Gov. Austin Davis announced that the state will invest $21,445,823 to create 11 Business Assistance Service Centers across Pennsylvania including Central Pa to help small businesses access counseling and technical support. The centers, funded through the Historically Disadvantaged Business Assistance Program, will partner with local groups to offer bilingual services—ensuring resources are accessible to all.  Central Penn Business Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • PASSHE will host a convening at Shippensburg University to improve college credit transfer so students can pay less and finish school sooner (bringing together more than 30 colleges and state partners). The meeting (which will explore ways to count prior learning and work experience) will help meet worker shortages in health, education, and STEM.  Central Penn Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • High winds on Wednesday night caused over 20,000 people statewide to lose power, and nearly 5,000 in central areas remained without electricity; most Harrisburg customers had their power restored by 11 p.m. Thursday while some are still waiting for full service until 11 p.m. today—customers are urged to avoid downed wires and use flashlights instead of candles.  PennLive
  • USDA issued revised guidance on Wednesday—reducing SNAP benefits by 35% instead of 50%—to give food stamp recipients larger partial benefits amid a government shutdown and legal challenges. Pennsylvania officials said the new system may delay benefit issuance by several business days and increase payment errors.  WGAL
  • Veterans Day on November 11 will feature multiple ceremonies in central Pennsylvania—despite the federal shutdown limiting some events—to honor military service members in Mechanicsburg, Cleona and Lancaster.  PennLive
