Good morning, Harrisburg. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 6th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 14,000 customers in Harrisburg remain without power due to wind and rain that caused outages around 8:30 p.m. on November 5—PPL Electric said power will be restored by 5:00 a.m. today.  Local 21 News
  • The PPL Foundation announced $100,000 in emergency funding to help groups close food access gaps across eastern and central Pennsylvania. The funds will support more than 60 nonprofit agencies—ensuring food pantries stay stocked and offering hope to neighbors facing food insecurity.  Central Penn Business Journal
  • Harrisburg University students met at a roundtable on Wednesday to propose new ideas for downtown, including cat cafes, arcades, and e-sports facilities to fill vacant spaces at Strawberry Square. They argued that empty stores and sparse retail options make the city feel too empty and push young people to leave — urging a change in local development.  PennLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • HACC faculty returned to classrooms today after a brief 12-minute bargaining session failed to settle a contract dispute that includes delayed posting of board meeting agendas and allegations over course material access—college officials say faculty blocked online content while union representatives defend their right to manage academic materials. The conflict continues as union leaders hint at further negotiations in the coming days.  PennLive
  • Officials from Susquehanna Township School District said voters rejected the Earned Income Tax referendum by 56.8 percent, which would have replaced the flat $270 occupation tax with a higher rate to generate $3.5 million annually for a new school on Stanley Drive. Superintendent Tamara Willis stated the district will explore other options, including moving 5th and 6th graders to a renovated office building on Deer Path Road for next school year — and they remain committed to addressing classroom overcrowding.  PennLive
  • Cumberland Valley School District grew fast in Cumberland County and struggled with money because state funding did not keep up—officials said new schools will open to help more students.  PennLive
  • A report by Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children shows that the early care and education system is in crisis because families face high costs, there are too few workers, and many kids lack access to good programs—a shortfall that costs the state $6.65 billion each year and leaves over 3,000 jobs open. The report urges new state spending such as $55 million for worker bonuses, a $17 million boost for pre-K care, and $9.5 million to help Head Start keep working.  Central Penn Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Harrisburg should expect delays as the 19th Street bridge over I-83 will be demolished from Saturday, Nov 15 to Sunday, Nov 16. PennDOT said detours will start at 11 p.m. Saturday and continue until about 8 a.m. Sunday—local commuters are urged to follow posted signs.  PennLive
  • PJM said it has enough power capacity to serve 67 million people this winter but warned that electricity demand is outpacing new generation, prompting plans for unannounced tests and increased site visits — measures designed to improve generator performance during extreme weather. The grid operator will work with stakeholders to address the tightening reserve margin as demand grows.  Central Penn Business Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study by the American Lung Association showed lung cancer survival rates in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware improved due to earlier detection and more treatment options. Volunteer firefighter Perry Lee said he benefited from early surgical treatment and screening gave his family peace of mind—research credits these advances despite low national screening rates.  CBS News Philadelphia

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A report published on September 3rd examined mixed-use residential developments in Cumberland County and showed that homes at Arcona by Charter Homes and Neighborhoods use 10 key elements to offer residents more than just a roof—developers believe this strategy creates lasting neighborhood appeal.  PennLive
  • Greystar announced that The Henry at Klein Mills in Elizabethtown is now pre-leasing with first move-ins slated for fall — the community will offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments with modern amenities and a convenient location near shops and job centers.  Central Penn Business Journal
