COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lebanon County food banks are facing challenges as the state budget impasse threatens SNAP benefits that will expire Nov. 1 with rising food prices stressing budgets. The Caring Cupboard in Palmyra, led by David Fitzkee, urged officials to visit local pantries to see firsthand the struggles families may soon face—prompting a call for community help.  ABC27
  • The Boys & Girls Club was vandalized in August and now faces over $75,000 in damage as it works with insurance adjusters. A community appreciation day—held as a Halloween bash—is set for Oct. 29 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the John N. Hall Clubhouse to thank local donors.  Local 21 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Harrisburg rose on Monday to $3.19 per gallon, compared to the national average of $3 as reported by GasBuddy. Some stations in Silver Spring Twp. and Hampden Twp. offer gas for under $3—one at $2.75 and another at $2.89.  PennLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Messiah University has suspended its men's lacrosse program while it investigates hazing allegations from September 13—an inquiry expected to finish in 90 days.  ABC27
  • Cumberland County's West Shore School District is seeking a new board member after former president Heidi Thomas resigned unexpectedly — the board will soon interview and vote on a candidate who will serve until her term ends in 2027.  WGAL
  • Messiah University in Cumberland County suspended its men's lacrosse team after hazing reports from mid-September emerged and launched an investigation to ensure student safety—parents have been informed and support services are available.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, created in 1983 when Conrail abandoned unprofitable rail lines, will become independent on Jan. 1 by ending its link with the SEDA Council of Governments—this change follows its growth from owning 80 miles to now managing 220 miles of rail track.  PennLive
  • State lawmakers and advocates rallied to support Victoria’s Law, which would ban dogs, cats, and rabbits from puppy mills from being sold in pet stores—aiming to curb unethical breeding practices.  FOX43
  • The Pa. Human Relations Commission will host a town hall to address KKK recruitment cards found at a Mechanicsburg Halloween parade — officials plan to discuss concerns and outline next steps. Attendees will learn more about the commission’s planned response in the meeting.  FOX43
  • The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will perform digital message board maintenance on northbound Interstate 83 near the Fishing Creek exit in York County from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. on October 29. It will also work on westbound Interstate 78 near Route 645 in Berks County from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on November 12 — drivers should expect temporary lane and shoulder closures.  PennLive
