EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Lebanon School District is offering counseling support after a house fire on Church Street on Sept. 28 that killed five people, including two students—local authorities are working with the district to provide extra counseling for those affected.  WGAL
  • Faculty at HACC voted 93% to authorize a strike after they rejected a contract proposal, letting union leaders call a walk-out at any time—negotiations continue with more talks set for later this month.  PennLive
  • The Susquehanna Township School District has faced financial strain from a shutdown that stopped state and federal funding—forcing reliance on bank reserves to cover costs like special education and free meals. Superintendent Tamara Willis urged local residents to vote yes on a referendum on Nov. 4—hoping to secure funds for a new school.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Pennsylvania Department of State is recruiting registered voters to serve as poll workers at about 9,000 voting sites on November 4. Applicants must attend a mandatory training session and will receive $75 to $200 per day for their service & counties are seeking to fill all required positions promptly.  PennLive
  • Dozens of advocates gathered at the Capitol on October 2 to warn lawmakers that without a state budget, critical service providers will cut jobs, close programs, and reduce services for children, seniors, and others. A nonprofit survey shows that over 1,700 jobs have already been lost and nearly 241,000 people could face service cuts by the end of October—raising urgent calls for action.  WITF
  • The PA Department of Agriculture revealed the 2026 Farm Show theme—Growing a Nation—at a press conference on Oct. 2; the event will run from Jan. 10-17.  Local 21 News
  • Pennsylvania’s archery deer season starts Oct. 4 and runs through Nov. 21—new rules from Act 36 allow hunting on several Sundays, and the season resumes Dec. 26 through Jan. 19. Hunters with valid licenses must follow bag limits, use approved equipment, and report any deer harvested within 10 days.  FOX43
  • PennDOT has asked drivers to report potholes and other road concerns to its Customer Care Center by detailing issues and marking locations on an online map—reports will help schedule repairs and reduce hazards.  Local 21 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Penn State Health announced today that Kyle Snyder is the new president and chief operating officer and Tracy Moyer is the new chief financial officer—Moyer has worked in the system for over 20 years and Snyder will work with outgoing COO Deborah Addo through October during a leadership change aimed at improving care quality.  Central Penn Business Journal

  • Eastern York High School is hosting its fourth annual Pink Out volleyball match today against Donegal High School Indians—an event started by coach Kristie Bunn-Kingston in memory of her mother to raise funds for breast cancer research, with Dr. Heather Thieme speaking and a mobile mammogram bus available from 4 p.m.  FOX43
