BUSINESS NEWS

  • Constellation updated plans for the Clean Energy Center at Three Mile Island Unit 1, noting that the facility is nearly 80% staffed and the restart is set for 2027 while inspections and regulatory filings are on track—bolstered by a purchase agreement with Microsoft that supports grid reliability and job growth in the Midstate. This progress comes a year after the plant's reopening was announced as a shift from policies that limited the role of nuclear energy.  ABC27
  • Three leaders and initiatives from Enola-based Members 1st Federal Credit Union are finalists in the 2025 Credit Union Times Luminaries Awards — nominations include CIO of the Year for Garth Pricer, Excellence in Marketing for the 'Around the House' video series, and Executive Leadership for CEO Michael Wilson. CRIME NEWS

  • Dauphin County Commissioner George Hartwick crashed a county-owned vehicle while allegedly under the influence in a parking garage earlier this year and will enter the ARD program with six months of probation—requiring him to complete 30 hours of community service and a drug and alcohol evaluation.  ABC27

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hersheypark announced that its newly redesigned Shaq-A-Licious Laff Trakk opened on September 19 as part of its Halloween event featuring glowing visuals, intense audio, and graphic displays inspired by Shaq-A-Licious XL Gummies - the temporary overlay will run until November 2.  ABC27

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Due to a state budget delay, the YWCA paused its 100% state-funded Pre-K Counts program for 265 children on Sept. 19 and now awaits nearly $1M in funding for operations and salaries—forcing the program to adopt a new model that will affect many staff and families. The organization urged officials to pass the state budget so its full services can resume.  WGAL
  • PAM Health committed $5M to rename Lebanon Valley College's nursing program as the PAM Health School of Nursing—LVC President Dr. James M. MacLaren said the gift supports students as the area needs more nurses. The program, led by Dr. Terri Worthey, will graduate its first class in May 2026.  Central Penn Business Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since Act 77 was passed in 2019, thousands of mail ballots were rejected because voters failed to write a date on their envelopes and courts issued nine different rulings that left both voters and officials confused. The state Supreme Court is now reviewing the rule—an outcome that could finally bring clarity to how ballots are handled in future elections.  PennLive
  • Pennsylvania’s state budget is nearly three months late because state lawmakers have not agreed on a spending number—leaving funds for schools, counties and essential services in limbo. Gov. Shapiro and legislators continue to negotiate revenue options that may lead to tax increases or spending cuts in the coming fiscal year.  PennLive
  • PennDOT announced that 104 roundabouts have been built statewide since 2005 and over 30 more are under construction to reduce crashes and improve traffic flow. A 20-year review showed that injury crashes dropped 51% and peak traffic moved 30% faster—roundabouts will continue to be built to boost road safety.  WGAL
  • PennDOT began work Tuesday to clean up the homeless encampment on South Front Street—this step cleared the area known as 'Tent City' for the I-83 south bridge replacement. The cleanup is expected to cost about $750,000 while Capitol police removed any trespassers still on the property.  Local 21 News

  • UPMC Pediatricians in Derry Township warn that Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease is surging among children as schools resume and advise that careful hand washing can stop the virus spread. Parents are told to keep children home if they show a fever or mouth sores, as the illness is usually mild and lasts 7-10 days.  FOX43
