CRIME NEWS

  • Charles Hutton, 24, allegedly waved a large machete-style knife at a Sheetz on Cedar Cliff Drive on March 3—he stabbed the ground, took off his clothes, and damaged a work van for over $2,000 before fleeing in a Subaru—and police charged him with simple assault by physical menace, disorderly conduct, harassment, and criminal mischief.  FOX43
  • A Lancaster County mother faces charges after her toddler overdosed on fentanyl, with state police noting she was previously arrested after being seen slumped over her steering wheel at a traffic light.  WGAL
  • Police charged a Lancaster mother with three felony counts of aggravated assault and child endangerment after her 19-month-old daughter overdosed on fentanyl during a nap—emergency responders gave naloxone and flew the child to Hershey Medical Center for treatment.  PennLive
  • Jury selection begins for the death sentence retrial of Seifullah Adbul-Salaam—who spent 30 years in prison after being convicted of killing New Cumberland Police Officer Willis Cole in 1994.  FOX43

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Robert J. Gildea, the Lower Dauphin School District superintendent, announced his resignation and will step down in August after two years in the role — the district posted his full statement on X.  WGAL
  • Gov. Josh Shapiro’s budget plan would give extra money—$494 million for underfunded schools and $32 million for districts with high property taxes—to help close funding gaps, while top GOP lawmakers say the formula may treat 348 of 500 districts unfairly. Lawmakers must agree on the proposal before the June 30 deadline as legal challenges over school funding continue.  WITF
  • Lower Dauphin School District superintendent Dr. Robert Gildea announced his resignation effective Aug. 31 to pursue a new opportunity outside public education. The school board said it will soon begin the search for a new leader—someone focused on supporting students.  Local 21 News
  • At Monday’s meeting the South Western School District board discussed removing plywood from the Emory H. Markle Middle School gender-neutral bathroom windows amid community concerns. The Buildings, Ground and Equipment Committee replaced old 'gender inclusive' signs with temporary ADA compliant ones and ordered a red 'restrooms' sign for each unit—aiming to increase teacher oversight and create uniformity across bathrooms.  Local 21 News
